How to Charge Your iPhone to Extend Battery Life
Six habits that hold up, plus the two iOS settings that do most of the work for you. No app can make a battery last longer on its own, but how you charge genuinely can.
1. Heat does more damage than anything else
Chemistry runs faster when it is warm, and a lithium ion cell ages accordingly. Above roughly 35 degrees Celsius the loss becomes permanent, and a battery kept near 45 degrees can degrade at more than twice the rate of one at 25. A phone left on a dashboard in the sun can reach far past that within an hour.
- Do not charge under a pillow or a duvet.
- Take a thick case off if the phone is already warm while charging.
- Get it out of a parked car in summer, charging or not.
- Charging and heavy use at the same time is the worst combination. Games while plugged in add both.
2. Live in the middle
A full charge holds the cell at high voltage, and a deep drain stresses it from the other end. Time spent in the middle costs the least.
You do not have to be strict about it. Time is the variable, not the individual charge, so what matters is where the battery sits for hours, not the single moment it touches 100% before you unplug it.
3. Let iOS do it for you
Two settings automate the middle. Which one you have depends on the model.
iPhone 15 and later: Charge Limit
Settings, then Battery, then Charging. Pick a ceiling and the phone simply stops there. In iOS 18 the choices are 80, 85, 90, 95 and 100 percent. With a limit set the phone still tops up to full occasionally to keep its own charge estimate accurate.
iPhone 14 and earlier: Optimized Battery Charging
Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health and Charging. The phone learns your routine, holds around 80% overnight and finishes the last stretch shortly before you normally wake up.
If your iPhone has Charge Limit, use it. A setting that acts beats a reminder that asks, and it works while you are asleep.
4. Slower charging is gentler
Fast charging is convenient and it makes heat. When you are not in a hurry, an ordinary charger overnight or at your desk puts less thermal load on the battery than the fastest brick you own.
5. Overnight charging is fine, the hours at full are the cost
A modern iPhone stops charging at 100%, so it does not overcharge. What adds up is the time it then spends sitting at full, which is exactly what Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit exist to shorten. 6. Do not drain to 0% to calibrate
Full discharge cycles were advice for older battery chemistries. Lithium ion prefers partial top ups, and a discharge that ends near empty is one of the few events that is clearly hard on it. Charging from 60% to 80% is not wasteful, it is the good case.
7. Cold matters too
Very cold temperatures cut the range you get temporarily, which is normal and reverses when the phone warms up. Charging a phone that is genuinely freezing is the case that can do lasting harm. Let it come back to room temperature first.
What does not work
iOS does not let a third party app suspend other apps or clear memory, so nothing on the App Store can free up battery for you by closing things in the background.
